The governor of the Bank of Portugal, Mário Centeno, defended this Thursday the importance of public investment for the growth of the country and considered that there is greater demand for its allocation.
“The investment cycle in Portugal It is very important to define the quality and speed of growth” in the country, said Mário Centeno during a round table that he shared with the Governor of the Bank of Spain, Pablo Hernández de Cós, and the Vice President of the European Investment Bank (EIB), Ricardo Mourinho Félix, at the conference “investing and financing of resilience and renewal in Europe”, in Lisbon.
The governor of the Bank of Portugal (BdP) stressed that periods of growth in Portugal are associated with investment and exports.
Throughout the session, the head of the Portuguese banking supervisor argued that the country needs public investment, but stressed that it has become more “demanding”. “For example, In Portugal we end up paying for growth that doesn’t interest us”defended.
“We have empty stadiums… We have become much more selective, much more demanding with the concept of investment,” said the governor of the Bank of Portugal.
For Mário Centeno, this requirement is necessary: “this is what we are now and I think it is good, it is a very good development”.
