Carristur workers carry out a 24-hour strike on Saturday

Workers at Carristur, a company belonging to the Carris transport company that provides tourist and training services, are on strike for 24 hours this Saturday, demanding a pay rise and a reduction in working hours.

Called by the Union of Road and Urban Transport Workers of Portugal (STRUP), the strike begins at midnight and ends at midnight on Saturday 27th.

On Sunday – and similar to what has been happening since the 20th – the workers will return to the partial strike, which affects the first three and last three hours of the work day, a protest that will continue until progress is made in negotiations with the company, Manuel Leal, from STRUP, told Lusa.

The workers (in general) of Companhia Carris de Ferro de Lisboa, the capital’s public transport operator, went on a partial strike between the 15th and 19th, demanding better working conditions, including a 100 euro increase in the salary scale and a reduction of the working week to 35 hoursincluding travel times during working hours and updating meal allowance amounts.

Since the company has since updated the table by 60 euros, the union is requesting that 40 euros be added to match the demand for an additional 100 euros in the table.

Another of STRUP’s demands is the “definitive integration” of the workers of Carrisbus, which maintains and repairs buses and trams, and Carristur, which provides tourist and training services, both 100% owned by Carris.

The strike initially involved drivers and brakemen, who were joined by workers from the workshops of Companhia Carris de Ferro de Lisboa, the capital’s public transport operator.

During this period, STRUP recorded “attendance of over 90%” and “some situations of shift interruptions, in the order of 100%”.

According to Carris, participation in the partial strike was, on average, 3.3% across the company’s global workforce.

Among crew members, the adherence rate “was 27.6%, which led to cuts in public services, on average, between 5.5% and 10%,” the company said.

If Carris does not respond to their demands, STRUP will issue a 24-hour strike notice on September 18, covering all sectors of the company.
