Chega accuses the Government of wanting “confusion” with the Treasury and asks for new tables for August

The president of Chega asked the government on Friday to implement new IRS withholding tables until August and accused the prime minister of wanting to “create confusion” with this issue by bringing it to the October budget negotiations.

“Mr Prime Minister, download the IRS now”, said André Ventura, at a press conference at the national headquarters of Chega, in Lisbon, arguing that “it is urgent and essential that the Government does this” and that “it makes no sense to include retention tables in the budget process.”

For the president of Chega, “the entry into force with effect from AugustThe creation of new IRS withholding tables “is the only acceptable situation” following the approval by Parliament of a decree that reduces the rates of this tax to the sixth bracket, “to ensure that the Portuguese feel relief in their pockets.”

André Ventura argued that the IRS cut that went into effect this year was something “already agreed and its cost was already planned” by the Government itself and stressed that “tax legislation is the exclusive responsibility of parliament.”

“By not violating the brake law, the The government has no political or legal reason to avoid regulating it.. Toward If the Government does not do so, it is disobeying, it is disobeying a sovereign body.which is parliament, and thus violating the rules of operation of the rule of law,” he said.

At this press conference, André Ventura announced that “Chega presented a draft resolution” in parliament, precisely “requesting and recommending that the Government update the IRS withholding tables this year, to do so during these two months, July and August.”

However, he acknowledged that this initiative will have no practical effect, given the interruption of parliamentary work until September, but framed it as “a signal from the Assembly of the Republic to the Government that parliament is truly committed to ensuring that its rules remain void of norms.”
