IL says it’s normal to apply an IRS reduction this year but the relief is small

The leader of the Liberal Initiative said on Friday that the Government’s decision to apply the new tables of withholding taxes at source this year to reduce the IRS is “normal”, but that there is little relief for the Portuguese.

“I think it is natural, normal. I also think that this reduction, this IRS relief, is too little and that it is already too late,” said Rui Rocha during a visit to Feira de Santiago, in Setúbal.

“We must remember how all this began, with the AD’s announcement of a reduction of 1.5 billion euros, which after all had already been done in part, in large part, and which then discovered that [a redução] was worth around 300 million,” he added.

Rui Rocha recalled that, after the controversy over the value of the IRS reduction, AD and PS “spent two months discussing whether it was two euros more for a certain level, three euros less”, highlighting that “The PS understood that people who earn 1,500/1,600 euros are rich people.“.

“Now, when the President of the Republic finally promulgated it, there was another discussion: whether [a redução do IRS] “Whether it has already been reflected in the pockets of the Portuguese this year, or whether a reckoning is still awaited next year,” said the IL leader.

“I don’t think there was any point in putting it off. “The Parliament has decided, the decision itself said that it had immediate effect after its promulgation. And one thing is certain: the money belongs to the Portuguese, the money is better in the pockets of the Portuguese than in the pocket of the State,” he added.

Rui Rocha also expressed his concern about the country’s finances, after recalling that the Government had approved several increases in the Civil Service, the last of which, decided on Friday, amounted to 300 euros for the military.

“We are not going to question any of these increases because we realize that the Public Service also has to be well paid, but this is a challenge for the Government: we have to look at the weight of the State, because We need to rationalize the State so that we can pay better for public services.and we must focus on the country’s growth,” he warned.

“Otherwise all these increases will be unmanageable, they will not be manageable, and those who will always pay will be the same, that is why we need to reduce the State’s burden and get the country to grow. This is the challenge that AD has,” concluded the leader of the Liberal Initiative.
