Chega considers the Government’s decision to apply a reduction in the IRS this year to be “correct”

The president of Chega said on Friday that the Government made a “correct” decision by applying the new withholding tax tables at source this year to reduce the IRS, expressing himself “happy that Chega has contributed” to this decision.

Speaking to reporters at the entrance to the 18th Chega National Council in Lisbon, André Ventura stressed that “it was necessary for Chega to exert this enormous pressure on the Government so that it could take the decision that seemed obvious” to apply the new tax retention tables.

“The Government complied with what Parliament, legitimately, because it is a fiscal issue, decided. And so, it is in this sense that I note that it was a decision taken correctly and I am glad that Chega has contributed to making this decision a reality in September for the majority of Portuguese people,” he added.

André Ventura also said that he does not regret the press conference held this morning in which he pressured the Government to apply the new withholding tax tables in August.

The leader of Chega also stated, regarding whether the measures for the Armed Forces presented this Friday at the Council of Ministers brought Chega closer to the Government in the budget negotiations, that “there is a long way to go” and that “The government already knows what Chega’s priorities are.”

“This has been clear from day one, we are addressing the issue and negotiating in a frank and open manner, and we hope that these will also be concrete and significant steps,” he said.

Ventura explained that “If there is this frankness, if there is this loyalty and if there is this good faith on the part of the Government” there is “a long way to go”but that the party today “is neither closer nor further from approving the budget.”

IRS cut coming in September with new withholding tables

The Government will approve new tax withholding tables that will reflect the reduction in IRS rates, following the promulgation of the diploma by the President of the Republic, which will enter into force in September and with retroactive effect.

“Following the promulgation of AR Decree No. 7/XVI by the President of the Republic, which modifies the IRS rate table, the Government will approve new tax withholding tables that will reflect the reduction in IRS rates,” the Ministry of Finance said in a statement sent on Friday.

The president of Chega asked the Government this afternoon – even before the executive’s announcement – to implement new IRS withholding tables until August and accused the Prime Minister of wanting to “create confusion” on this issue by bringing it to negotiations on the October budget.
