The União das Misericórdias Portuguesas (UMP) will update the monthly rate charged to users starting in November based on the extraordinary pension supplement intended for older people, according to a circular to which Jornal de Notícias had access.
In the circular, dated October 10, the UMP says that it is “It is legitimate for the Misericians to review the calculation of the users’ family contributions”on the occasion of the extraordinary pension supplement, informing that the update will be carried out “in the month of receipt” of the same.
The UMP’s decision is supported by a 2019 ordinance, which says that the contribution can be reviewed “due to changes in the circumstances that served as the basis for defining the family contribution of a certain householdthat is, in monthly income per capita.”
The institution states, according to Jornal de Notícias (JN), that the supplement is “an income regardless of its exceptionality in any capacity.”
In statements to the newspaper, the president of the National Confederation of Retirees, Pensioners and the Elderly (MURPI), Isabel Gomes, affirms that the decision “is unfair” and reinforced the urgency of a public network of residences.
“The State gives it to the people. What is customary is, in IRS times, to make an adjustment to the monthly household payment. Nothing justifies it at this point.“, he highlighted.
For her part, the president of the Association of Retirees, Pensioners and Retirees (APRE!), Maria do Rosário Gama, said that the decision “is inhumane”.
“It is a bonus that is given to older people, many of whom have very low pensions,” he said.
In August, in the Council of Ministers, the Government approved the extraordinary supplement for pensioners, which varies between 100 and 200 euros, and will be paid in October.
