Boeing workers agree to new deal, end seven-week strike

Workers at aircraft construction company Boeing accepted a new draft labor agreement, ending a more than seven-week strike by some 33,000 employees in the United States.

After rejecting two proposals, IAM-District 75, a section of the machinists union (IAM), declared Monday night that 59% of its members approved the agreement. which includes salary increases of 38% in four years.

However, the North American company refused to meet the strikers’ demand to restore a company pension plan that had been frozen for almost a decade.

The construction company said it could take “a few weeks” to resume production, in part because some workers may need new training.

The average annual salary for Boeing machinists is currently $75,608 (69,495 euros) and will eventually rise to $119,309 (109,664 euros) under the new contract, the company said.

Although Boeing reached an agreement with the workers, The strike cost the company and suppliers more than ten billion dollars, equivalent to 9.19 billion euros.
