The Government will spend 105 million euros next year to reduce the number of students without classes, the Minister of Education announced this Tuesday, ensuring that differences are already noticeable with respect to the last academic year.
The current team of the Ministry of Education, Science and Innovation (MECI) presented the “More Classes, More Success” Plan to reduce the number of students without classes and the next State Budgets foresee a budget of 105 million for the 15 measures of the plan and another two that were added to attract teachers to educational centers where it is more difficult to hire.
Among the measures is the launch of an extraordinary competition for teachers, which will cost 70 million euros next year, another measure to retain and attract teachers that will cost 14.6 million or the 10 million necessary to pay displaced teachers who agreed to stay. in one of the schools identified as having the most recruitment problems, Minister Fernando Alexandre explained this Tuesday.
Support for relocation was once again one of the measures most questioned by the courts, which pointed out the injustice of a displaced teacher being placed in a school adjacent to another that entitled him to a travel allowance.
Questioned by the Liberal Initiative deputy Patrícia Gil Vaz about the results of the “More classes, More Success” program, Fernando Alexandre assured that “The results are much better than last year at this time.“.
“We have indications that the measures we have on the ground are working and responding to the extent we expected.”
The objective of the plan is to reduce to zero the almost one thousand students who in the last academic year did not have classes in at least one subject throughout the year.
In total, OE2025 will have a total consolidated expenditure of 7.47 billion euros, that is, 6.8% more than last year, according to the proposal being debated this Tuesday in parliament.
The executive plans to spend 5,850 million euros next year, 3.3% more than expected for this year due to “the valorization of careers, the recovery of teachers’ service time and the hiring of teaching staff, promoting implementation and attractiveness of the teaching career and reverse the effect of retirements,” reads the report that accompanies the OE proposal.
The current government team reached an agreement with the teachers for a gradual recovery of the six years, six months and 23 days of service that were frozen during the Troika period.
Accounting for service time began to be paid in September of this year and must be completed at the end of the term.
Next year, the recovery of service time will cost 214 million euros, explained the minister, highlighting that the calculation of service time will mean that, in July of next year, 66% of teachers will reach the peak of their career. , that is, they are located between the 7th and 10th level: “We will have 25 thousand more teachers at the higher levels, if this is not valuing the career, what is?”, he asked during the ongoing debate in the Assembly of the Republic.
