A new study has identified four nutritional supplements that can increase skin hydration, making it more vibrant, youthful and less wrinkled.
The study, published in Frontiers in Nutrition, found that supplementation with collagen, ceramides, hyaluronan, and procyanidins can help provide adequate hydration to the skin.
The researchers conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis, “processes that aggregate the results of previous research on a subject and evaluate the results of various studies” of 66 trials.
And they found that the four aforementioned supplements were “shown to be effective” in moisturizing the skin, and the study also recommended two more supplements, such as lactic acid bacteria and astaxanthin, but the evidence was insufficient.
“Instead of taking these supplements, you can look at your overall diet,” says nutrition consultant Kathy Siegel, adding that focusing on nutrient -rich foods “is the best start” when thinking about “maintaining and restoring healthy skin.” “.
Some nutritionists agree that combined diets may be better than focusing on individual supplements.
“This study discovered the beneficial effects of certain supplements. While this may be the case, I probably take a diet approach, ”said Lisa Young, PhD, RDN, author of Finally Whole, Finally Healthy, and a member of our Doctors Expert Council. ,
“Eat a healthy diet, stay hydrated, and practice healthy skin hygiene,” says Dr. Lisa Young, a member of the National Council of Experts. “Dietary supplements may help, but we don’t know the long-term effects or interactions with medications.”
