Frida Kahlo will star in a new musical

A musical inspired by the life and work of the Mexican painter Frida Kahlo is being prepared. According to the Associated Press, Frida the musical will narrate the artist’s journey from Mexico City to Paris and then to New York, in the company of her husband, also a painter Diego Rivera, and her return to the house where she was born.

The musical, which was approved by the painter’s heirs, will feature music by Mexican Jaime Lozano and lyrics by award-winning American playwright Neena Bebe. It will be “a celebration of Kahlo’s joyous spirit of creativity and his incomparable gift for transforming physical and emotional pain into breathtaking beauty.”

“We are deeply moved that this show allows viewers around the world to get to know Frida beyond her artwork. Full of life, ahead of her time and immersed in the culture of Mexico, she was a woman guided by an eternal passion for life. I hope this show inspires all women to have the courage to fight for their dreams.”

Frida Kahlo was born in 1907 in Coyoacán, Mexico. She began painting at the age of 18, when she was temporarily bedridden after a tram accident that left her with consequences for the rest of her life. Her artistic work consists of about 150 works, mostly self-portraits, which reveal the artist’s emotional state at various times in her life. Mixing popular and surrealist influences, some of these paintings deal with her turbulent relationship with Diego Rivera, whom she married in 1929.

Kalho died in 1954 at his home in Coyoacá, known as La Casa Azul. The space has been transformed into a museum in honor of the artist, one of the most recognized Mexican painters and feminist icon. It opened its doors in 1958.
