Archipelago Arts Center with exhibitions by Carla Filipe and Margarida Andrade

The Arquipélago — Contemporary Art Center of the Azores inaugurates on September 24 the exhibitions “Confessions of a baptism”, by Carla Filipe, and “No Future also used brushes”, by Margarida Andrade.

In a statement, this art center, located in Ribeira Grande, on the island of São Miguel, highlights that Carla Filipe’s exhibition is “composed from the appropriation of objects and documents or built through the permeable relationship between objects of art, popular culture and activism”. .

For its part, the work of Margarida Andrade, from São Paulo, uses “ceramic pieces, literature, finds and drawings”, appealing to the imagination about a “future or past that is beyond our understanding”.

That day, the work Transformatório, by Susanne Themlitz, “will be activated again with a new collaboration” with the Municipal Museum of Vila Franca do Campo.

In a message, the director of the Archipelago explains that, based on “stories from the Azores”, the exhibitions will seek to approach the lives of “less visible people”.

“Arquipélago — Centro de Arte Contemporáneo enters in September in a mode of transgression, based on the idea that art must be critical and emancipatory, just as an artistic institution must take risks and problematize”, writes João Mourão.

On September 24, the opening day of the two exhibitions, the Centro de Artes Contemporáneas dos Açores “will also celebrate one of the most transgressive arts”, transformism, with the exhibition by Valdemar Creator, a native of Ribeira Grande.

“Nightlife and drag queen bars have always been these places of possibility, of construction of other narratives and, without the existence of this form of entertainment on the island, it seemed to us that the Arquipélago – Centro de Artes Contemporâneas should be the place reactivation of this art in São Miguel”, says the press release.
