French writer Dominique Lapierre dies at 91

The French writer Dominique Lapierre, best-selling author of espionage and contemporary history, has died at the age of 91, his wife told the French media this Sunday. The writer died on Friday, according to the family, who lived in Ramatuelle, in the Provence region.

Lapierre, born in Paris in 1931, is known, among other titles, for the works “The Fifth Knight” or “The City of Joy”, about poverty in Calcutta, which director Roland Joffé adapted for film in 1992.

The author had been a reporter for the magazine Paris Match, and his experiences in India served as inspiration for the novel, which sold millions of copies, partly destined to the fight against poverty in that country.

He also wrote “Midnight in Bopal”, about the toxic gas leak from an American factory in that Indian city that caused 10,000 deaths and 500,000 injuries and became known as the biggest industrial disaster in history.

Many of his works, such as “Paris Arde?”, were written together with the American journalist Larry Collins, with whom he also wrote “Tonight freedom”, or “Will you to take it hurts for me”, about the life of the bullfighter Manuel. Benítez “The Cordovan”.
