Ursula von der Leyen denounces cyber attack against her campaign website

The website of Ursula von der Leyen’s candidacy for a second term as president of the European Commission was the target of a cyber attack, the German said on the social network X on Tuesday.

The candidate of the European People’s Party (EPP) revealed in a publication that her campaign website, http://ursula2024.eu, was attacked by “robots“.

Cyberattacks will not stop us. I defend a strong Europe that can defend itself, anywhere,” she stressed.

Several European countries, including Germany, Poland and the Czech Republic, declared last week that they had been subject to cyberattacks by Russian hackers supported by Moscow.

Last week, North American diplomacy condemned the recent campaign of cyber attacks in Europe and attributed its origin to Russia.

Moscow, for its part, considered the German government’s accusations unfounded. that the Russian hacking group, controlled by Moscow, had recently carried out a cyberattack campaign in Germany.

Sources close to the current president of the institution told Lusa at the end of April that the re-election of Ursula von der Leyen as head of the European Commission is “on track”, admitting however that approval depends on the composition of the new European Parliament (PE).

It is the EP that must approve, on a proposal from the European Council, the new president of the Commission by an absolute majority (half of the MEPs plus one), and Ursula von der Leyen must obtain a “green light” from at least 361 parliamentarians ( in a total of 720 places).

As the first female president of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen was approved by the EP in July 2019 with 383 votes in favor, 327 against and 22 abstentions, in a close vote.

The European elections are scheduled for June 6-9.
