“Yellowjackets”: Is it still worth trying to fly with this team?

It’s a plane crash that sets the tone for the story, but there was no rumble, no smoke, no explosions when “Yellowjackets” premiered in 2021. A Showtime production —in Portugal broadcast on HBO Max— was quietly installed in he transmission, dwarfed by much more imposing and expensive bets. However, as if it were a sect, little by little she began to gain followers. Some called others, who brought a few more, and so on. Suddenly, the series became a phenomenon and the second season became one of the most anticipated in early 2023.

But after all, what makes “Yellowjackets” any different? EITHER nonsense, black humor, and above all two groups of very strong actors. The drama begins with a women’s soccer team boarding a flight for a national competition. When the plane crashes in the middle of nowhere, with no rescue in sight, the story becomes something of a cross between “Lost” and “The God of the Flies.” People who have to learn to hunt in the middle of the jungle? Have. Alliances, betrayals and power struggles? Also. Cannibalism? Clear. Strange satanic rituals? Make them come

As we enter season two — the first episode of which is available on HBO Max, with a new one every week — we don’t immediately know everything that happened there, and this is one of the great mysteries that keeps us hooked on “Yellowjackets.” . It’s just that, eventually, the group is rescued and the narrative then splits between that past and the present, more than 20 years later, with grown women pretending nothing much happened. Everyone is in their apparently normal life (boring or successful), until we begin to realize that reality is very different.
