It was revealed this Tuesday morning the short list of the International Booker Prize 2023. The announcement was made by the president of the jury, Leïla Slimani, on the first day of the London Book Fair, which runs until Thursday.
Qualifying the list of six finalists as “brave and subversive”, the Moroccan writer defended that the selected books are “essential, where the theme of the body is important”. This is not treated abstractly, but realistically. “These are books that talk about people, places, moments,” Slimani said. The president of the jury also highlighted the way in which the six authors “question the narrative and what it means to write a novel these days.”

Admitting that she tried to choose books that would move, surprise, and amaze her, Slimani wanted every reader to find a book for themselves in short list revealed this Tuesday, dominated by European languages, where French stands out, with two nominations. In addition to the Franco-Moroccan writer Leïla Slimani, the jury for this year’s major award for fiction translated into English is made up of the Ukrainian translator Uilleam Blacker, the Malaysian writer Tan Twan Eng, the New York critic Parul Sehgal and the Literature editor of the Financial Times. The International Booker Prize, sponsored by the Booker Prize Foundation, is awarded annually to a work of fiction translated into English and published in the United Kingdom or Ireland. In 2023, books published between May 1, 2022 and April 30, 2023 were eligible for the award.
The award was established in 2005 to encourage the publication and reading of quality international fiction in the UK and to promote translation work.
