Closed for 30 years, Lisbon’s Teatro Variedades reopens on October 5

The Teatro Variedades, located in Parque Mayer, in Lisbon, will reopen its doors on October 5, announced this Thursday the president of the Lisbon City Council (CML), Carlos Moedas.

“The reopening of Variedades, in addition to strengthening the range of performing arts, will introduce a new concept, with a reception space for independent productions and artists who have not had the opportunity to perform in other theatres, and for companies that do not have their own space,” reveals the CML statement.

“There we will have Artistas Unidos, but also Marina Mota, the revue theatre,” Moedas told reporters, leaving details of the programming of the building managed by the municipal cultural company for later.

The truth is that the theatre company Artistas Unidos, which will leave the Polytechnic next week, has already agreed to a show in the new life of Variedaes, whose programming will be coordinated with that of the adjacent municipal spaces.

“The Variety programming will be promoted in conjunction with the Capitolio and also with the Cine São Jorge, fostering a very active nucleus for the universe of theater, cinema, music and shows,” reads the press release.

Opened in 1926, the Teatro Variedades was the setting for magazine shows and theatre performances until 1966, when a fire destroyed the building, which was later restored. In the 1990s, the space hosted some television programmes and opened for sporadic performances, but eventually closed.

With capacity to accommodate 363 people, the new Variedades Theatre hall was designed by architect Aires Mateus, with a stage measuring 8.50 metres by 6 metres and an orchestra pit with a platform that allows it to be placed on four levels.
