Oregon primary: left-wing opponent ahead of current Democrat Kurt Schroeder

Left-wing rival Jamie McLeod-Skinner leads the incumbent Representative. Kurt Schroeder (D-OR) is in the main race for Oregon’s 5th congressional district and more than 60 percent of the vote continues to be counted Wednesday.

The 5th congressional district was redrawn to include more Republican counties, leaving Schroeder vulnerable to tough conditions for Democrats in the fall. But the increasingly polarized nature of national politics means that Schroeder, one of the few remaining fiscally conservative Democrats in parliament, is also vulnerable to challenges from the increasingly radical left.

Wall Street Magazine mentioned last week:

Mr. Schroeder is preparing for the May 17 primary, where he is challenged for not doing more to advance the Democratic agenda through Congress. Mr Schroeder voiced Democrats’ concerns about the cost of the social and climate package and opposed a committee bill that would allow the government to negotiate the price of prescription drugs. He also voted against restrictions on debt collection.

McLeod-Skinner, known for his failed attempts to run for Congress and become Secretary of State in Central Oregon, runs to Mr. McLeod’s left. Schroder.

Laurie Chavez-DeRemer, the former mayor of Happy Valley, won the Republican primaries in the district. Other well-known races include Republican Alec Scarlatos, a veteran and hero whose heroism is documented in the film. 15:17 to Paris, ran unopposed: he will face Democrat Val Hoyle in the open seat race to the 4th congressional district. In the gubernatorial race, Tina Kotek won the Democratic primary, while Kristin Drazan led the Republican primary.
