The former communist general secretary Carlos Carvalha considered this Tuesday that if Russia achieves its military objectives in Ukraine, the European Union (EU) will pay a heavy bill only for the commitments it made with kyiv.
“If the Russian Federation achieves its goals, the West, and in particular the EU, Go inherit a Ukraine with destroyed infrastructurewithout its industrial heart and with its limited access to the sea”, said Carlos Carvalhas, during a debate promoted by the PCP on the 20 years of circulation of the euro, at ISCTE, in Lisbon.
The former communist leader, who led the party for 12 years until he was succeeded in 2004 by Jerónimo de Sousa, added that with the commitments made by Brussels with kyiv, “The bill just for Ukraine to stay afloat will be heavy”in allusion to the possible integration of the country into the community bloc.
In line with the criticism leveled by the party in recent months, Carlos Carvalhas has rebelled against what he considers the role of the United States in fomenting the conflict, arguing that Washington’s actions are aimed at maintaining the sovereignty of the dollar.
The former Secretary General of the PCP added that the dollar has become hegemonic since World War II because the United States of America was the country least affected by the last Great War, among the nations that were involved in the conflict, arguing that the preponderance of the the dollar has held up for decades due to the “superiority in military weaponry” of the United States of America.
Relating these two elements, Carlos Carvalha argued that the emergence of another military power, alluding to Russia, to supplant the United States would call into question “the hegemony” of the US currency.
“China and Russia are in a position to question the absolute dominance of the United States and the dollar“, he added.
The former leader of the PCP commented that the continuation of the conflict on European soil is a “strategy of the United States” to maintain the sovereignty of the dollar, weakening the possibility of reordering the geopolitical and financial plan.
That the dollar is “rooted”, he continued, “does not mean that it does not have feet of clay” and there are countries, like Russia, that “At the military level, they are in a position to face it.”
In the final part of his speech, Carlos Carval warned that due to the socioeconomic effects of the war that began on February 24, “the magnitude of which will depend on the duration of the conflict and the support that China gives it.”
