Democratic strategist James Carville told CNN’s Anderson Cooper 360 on Wednesday that Democrats are better at fighting crime. It cited the now lifted ban on assault weapons and the “strong” increase in crime under former President Donald Trump last year.
Carville said: “At this point, the Democratic voters are controlling. San Francisco won last night. The faculty at Berkeley was defeated by the University of California at Berkeley. There is nothing strange about it. They lost to Seattle, Minneapolis, Buffalo, Cleveland, New Orleans, New York. I mean a lot of people in the party and a lot of people and influencers including the party understand that democrats all over the country live in this country and they want the country to be safe and they want people’s attention to them. . Working people walk the streets, take public transport, go to hospitals and send their children to school. What matters in this country is not some snobby, smug elite.”
“You know that President Biden and President Clinton developed and implemented a decade-long offensive weapons ban in 1994. Then they canceled. In 1994 we had 400,000 assault weapons, now we have 20 million. The violent crime rate fell sharply between 1994 and 2019. Only in the last year of Trump’s leadership has the crime rate increased. And I don’t understand why Democrats, some Democrats, are running away from this problem, because Democratic voters are not running away from it because they feel it. I feel it here in New Orleans. I talk to people on the street who feel it. And that should be our problem. That’s how it has to be.”
