The President of the Republic insisted this Sunday that the closure of emergency services in several hospitals stems from specific situations associated with replacement problems, and stated that he believes that the problem will not continue during the summer.
Asked by journalists about the closure of emergency services throughout the country, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa said that “here is a situation that has already occurred in previous years on this long bridge” and that has its origin in the casualties that several healthcare professionals. placed as “compensation” for the fatigue caused by the pandemic in the last two years.
However, the head of state rejected that the problem is transversal to the entire national territory and considered that it only occurs “at the points where the replacement occurs.” [de profissionais de saúde] it’s more complicated”.
On the sidelines of a meeting with Portuguese residents in Andorra, regarding the commemorations of the Day of Portugal, Camões and the Portuguese Communities, the President of the Republic pointed out “situations of accumulation and sacrifice of work” as the reason for the closure of emergencies and affirmed who believes that the problem does not go beyond this point.
“I hope not, because there will surely be a possibility of programming and preparation there. Let’s say that there are situations of accumulation of work sacrifice that, by the way, I have found in other countries. Portuguese nurses in England told me about it,” he added.
In the perspective of the President of the Republic, “the mini-breaches” will have a quick solution, but he said that it is also necessary to invest in the National Health System (SNS) “as a whole”.
