New Jersey removes ‘reasonable requirement’ requirement for concealed carry under SCOTUS 2A

New Jersey Acting Attorney General Matthew Platkin issued a directive to “all law enforcement leaders and district attorneys” on June 24, 2022.

Platkin’s directive is called “Directive describing the requirements for the transportation of firearms in public places”.

The directive states:

The U.S. Supreme Court made a decision yesterday that impacted New Jersey’s permit law, but it did not override our general permit requirements. Under current New Jersey law, a person may be allowed to carry only if they can demonstrate to a screening officer that the applicant meets the mandatory requirements under the following laws: (1) “has no barriers to hinder him or her to obtain a firearm. authorization to purchase or firearm buyer identification”, (2) “fully familiar with the safe handling and use of firearms” and (3) “[h]demonstrated a reasonable need to carry a pistol. “… NY State Rifle and Pistol Assoc. hr. When considering an individual’s application for a carry permit, appropriate law enforcement must specify that the applicant meets all standards in NJSA 2C:58-4d and NJAC 13:54-2.4, except when the applicant is not required to provide it. written proof of a reasonable need to carry a firearm.

The Platkin Directive concludes with the words: “This Directive shall enter into force immediately and shall remain in effect until repealed, amended or amended by order of the Attorney General.”
