Crystal Matthews, state representative and candidate for the Democratic U.S. Senate from South Carolina, apparently campaigned for dormant Republican candidates and financed the campaigns using illegal drug money.
An audio recording released by Project Veritas appears to show Matthews discussing the possibility of changing politics from within by forcing Democrats to run as Republicans with an inmate.
“We need secret sleepers. We need them to run as the opposing side, even if they are on our side, as they should. And we need them to win,” he said over the phone.
“We need people to run for the Republican nomination in this local election,” he said. “It’s the only way to change the momentum in South Carolina.”
These “sleepers” can “destroy” the inside, Matthews said.
“When we’re there enough, we can do real damage from the inside,” he said. “Then we can open some shit inside.”
While it’s unclear whether he was joking or exaggerating, Matthews also advocated the use of “drug” money for his campaign.
