An earthquake of magnitude 2.5 on the Richter scale was recorded this morning in Terceira, an island in the Azores that is experiencing a seismovolcanic crisis, reported the Portuguese Institute of the Sea and the Atmosphere (IPMA).
According to IPMA, the earthquake was recorded at 00:04 (1:04 in Lisbon) and had its epicenter near the village of Serreta, in the municipality of Angra do Heroísmo, on the island of Terceira.
“No information was received confirming that this earthquake was felt“said the institute.
Terceira is going through a “seismovolcanic crisis (…) since June 2022,” according to the Azores Seismovolcanic Monitoring and Information Center.
According to the Richter scale, earthquakes are classified according to their magnitude as micro (less than 2.0), very small (2.0-2.9), small (3.0-3.9), mild (4, 0-4.9), moderate (5.0-5.9). ), strong (6.0-6.9), large (7.0-7.9), important (8.0-8.9), exceptional (9.0-9.9) and extreme (when it is greater than 10).
This new earthquake occurs after, in the early hours of Monday, an earthquake of magnitude 3.9 on the Richter scale was felt in São Miguel, another island in the Azores archipelago.
