Chega presented this Sunday a draft resolution that recommends the creation of a possible parliamentary investigation commission to clarify the causes of the increase in non-Covid mortality between 2020 and 2021.
According to the Chega project, “14% more deaths were recorded (15,526) than would be expected taking into account the average of the previous six years”, with covid-19 only being associated with two of the six mortality peaks identified by the General Directorate of Health (DGS) for 2020.
“The report [Mortalidade Geral e por Grandes Grupos de Causas, da DGS] It also identifies that in 2020 there were more deaths from diseases of the circulatory system, such as strokes —1,618 more than expected— and 45% more deaths from hypertensive diseases, without this basis being explained. Therefore, it is important to find an explanation for this increase in unjustified deaths in the year 2020”, reads the document of the far-right party.
Highlighting some recent news that points to mortality figures from all causes in the country above what is expected for this time of year, the party denounced the lack of explanations on the part of the authorities and called for the immediate creation of a functioning commission for a period. of 120 days, with a view to clarifying the causes of the non-covid mortality figures and determining possible responsibilities.
“It is neither acceptable nor understandable that health authorities remain silent in the face of a strange and unusual mortality spike in Portugal -with a cross-sectional impact on all or almost all age groups-, refusing to initiate investigations or reveal credible explanatory data on this matter. . . (…) It has already become clear and evident that neither the covid-19 pandemic nor the heat wave that the country is going through are sufficient excluding factors to explain the mortality figures,” the Chega deputies refer.
