BE proposes cap on rent increases in 2023 to protect families from inflation

The BE presented this Thursday an “emergency solution” so that the rental price increases in 2023 have this year’s rise as a ceiling, thus preventing this update from reflecting the current high rate of inflation.

At a press conference in the Assembly of the Republic, the BE deputy Mariana Mortágua presented the party’s bill in which extraordinary regime of housing protection against inflation.

“The Left Bloc today brings an emergency solution to this problem of rising rents and what we are doing is limiting that increase,” he explained.

According to deputy Bloist, “the increase in rents is done by landlords automatically and annually according to a coefficient, with a value published by the INE”, a value that is based on inflation without housing and that in June of this year was already posted set at 9%.

The proposal made by BE is to limit the increase in rents in 2023 to the coefficient that was applied in 2022. There may be an increase in rents, but this increase in rents cannot be higher than the one in 2022,” he said, explaining that the party’s proposal is to extend this rule to all types of contracts.

BE’s objective, according to Mariana Mortágua, “is that no family has to bear an increase in income in line with inflation” that is felt this year.

“BE’s proposal is limited to placing this income update cap at the values that were in force during the current year, preventing are restated at the rate of inflation now applied”, summarized.

According to the bill that was presented in parliament, the annual income updating coefficient must therefore be set at the values that are in force this year, that is, 1.0043.

In the opinion of the leader of BE, this measure not only protects families but also “controls inflation”, warning that “housing is already a luxury good in Portugal” and “a problem for many families”.

“If the government were to adopt this measure, it would be the first time since the inflationary outbreak began that António Costa’s government has taken a transversal measure to protect wages and prevent prices from rising. I think it would be a good sign given to society and a also sign to reassure families who are concerned about the increase in inflation”, he appealed, insisting that this measure is of “the most elementary justice, but also of economic rationality”.
