fires Ministry of the Interior recognizes the need for adjustments in fire fighting in Serra da Estrela

The Ministry of Internal Governance (MAI) reported this Thursday that were identified in the firefighting in Serra da Estrela situations that from the operational point of view may need adjustments and that are already being evaluated.

The AMI indicates in a statement that the Secretary of State for Civil Protection, Patrícia Gaspar, met on Wednesday and on this day, by videoconference, with the mayors of the Municipal Councils of Covilhã, Gouveia, Guarda and Manteigas, to accompany the fire which started on Saturday in Garrocho, in Covilhã.

“In yesterday’s meetings [quarta-feira] and from that day situations were identified that, from the operational point of view and given the characteristics of the fire, may need adjustmentsand that they are already being evaluated, ”says the statement.

The meetings were attended by officials from the National Authority for Emergencies and Civil Protection (ANEPC) who explained the difficulties identified in terms of the orography of the region, the forecast weather conditions and the means involved.

The government and ANEPC will meet again with the mayors on Friday at 9 am, the statement said.

In the note, the Ministry states that “the complexity of this fire triggered an exceptional mobilization of resources”.

In the statement, released at 12:30 p.m., the Ministry referred to the presence of more than 1,500 operationssupported by 465 vehicles, 14 air assets and 16 track machines.

The MAI also indicates that “according to the rules provided for in the Operations Management System, and considering the number of assets already involved, the command of the operation is in charge of the 2nd National Commander of the ANEPC, Miguel Cruz”.

Through the ANEPC, the government sent a message to the mayors and all operational personnel in support of relief operations, the statement said.

This fire has already destroyed some 10,000 hectares, according to the European Copernicus Earth Observation System.
