Support for the food basket began to be paid this Monday to those who receive minimum benefits

The support of 60 euros for the food basket to the approximately 298,500 families that receive minimum social benefits began to be paid this Monday, reported an official source from the Ministry of Labor, Solidarity and Social Security.

Today, the extraordinary support of 60 euros began to be paid to some 298,500 beneficiary families of a minimum social benefit”, the office of Minister Ana Mendes Godinho informed Lusa.

In July, support was given to the beneficiaries of the social energy rate, “thus covering, between July and August, 1 million and 70 thousand households”, highlights the ministry.

According to the office, this support has so far represented a total of around 128 million euros.

Ana Mendes Godinho said on August 11 that the second tranche of support for the food basket has already been paid and admitted that she is evaluating its extension in the set of measures that will be discussed in September.

With respect to [apoio ao] basket, I take this opportunity to share that the second tranche has already been paid, covering more than a million people”, said Ana Mendes Godinho at the press conference after the meeting of the Council of Ministers.

Asked if the Government is willing to extend the support again, taking into account the rise in inflation, the minister replied that “these measures will be evaluated in the set of measures that will be discussed in September.”

An official source from the cabinet later clarified to Lusa that the support of 60 euros for the food basket of the most vulnerable families was paid on July 21 to the beneficiaries of the social electricity rate, indicating that in August the support will be paid “in 21 or 22” to those who receive minimum social benefits.

This support had been paid for the first time in April and May with a view to mitigating the increase in food prices, but it was finally extended.
