Police arrest two men for acts of vandalism linked to discontent

The Angolan National Police arrested two men involved in acts of vandalism and riots, in the province of Lunda Sul, for being dissatisfied with the provisional results of the elections.

According to a note posted on the Facebook page, the two citizens, aged 27 and 45, were arrested in the Candembe neighborhood, in the municipality of Saurimo, in Lunda Sul, and are being charged by the police. practice of acts of riot and instigation of acts of vandalism on public roads.

The police said that the arrest occurred after a complaint that “denounced two subjects who, dissatisfied with the provisional results of the general elections, took to the streets, instigating the practice of death threats against government entities, and inciting acts of vandalism against public property. ”.

The offenders were brought before the Public Ministry for due legal diligence.

On Saturday, the Mudei Civic Movement called for the release of six activists detained on the 25th and 26th in circumstances it described as “manifestly illegal” and that “they are being abused by the police forces.”

The six activists were arrested in the province of Uíge and five of them were on their way home on the 25th.

Another nine activists were arrested in the province of Malanje “for holding a reflection meeting on the electoral truth in the country”, having been released later.

Meanwhile, the Contestaria Civil Society (SCC), an informal group that brings together several activists, calls a press conference on Monday about the evolution of the electoral process and the arrest of activists.

In a note published this Sunday on its Facebook page, the SCC asks for respect for the popular will expressed at the polls.

It also demands that the National Police “stop the campaigns of terror and widespread panic with the use of firearms in areas such as Makela do Zombo and Bailundo, where unnecessary shots were fired to intimidate the population that simply demanded electoral truth and the reestablishment of legality”.

“We demand the immediate end of the arbitrary, illegal and extrajudicial arrests of activists and the subsequent political persecution in provinces such as Malanje, Uíge, Benguela and Luanda. The activists are good people and do not intend to sow chaos in the country or sow discord among Angolans”, says the same note, which says it does not recognize the provisional electoral results that give a 51.07% victory to the Popular Liberation Movement. . of Angola (MPLA) against 44.05% of the National Union for the Total Independence of Angola (UNITA).
