Mozambique: El Chapo wants to be public relations for all Mozambicans, including those who demonstrate in the streets

The winner of the presidential elections says he repudiates the demonstrations (“We are a party of peace”), but that he will talk to the protesters. The Frelimo candidate was elected with 70.67% of the votes.

Daniel Chapo, Frelimo candidate who the National Electoral Commission (CNE) announced this Thursday had won the presidential elections on October 9, affirmed that he will be the “president of all Mozambicans”, including those who demonstrate in the streets.

“From this moment we have results that will be validated by the Constitutional Council, let’s become president of all Mozambicansincluding those who are demonstrating,” said El Chapo, in a meeting with party leaders, in which he had at his side the president and leader of the Mozambique Liberation Front (Frelimo), Filipe Nyusi.

“Let’s talk to them. We repudiate the demonstrations because we are a party of peace and we will dialogue with all our brothers. We want to be president of all Mozambicans“, he reiterated.

The CNE announced this Thursday the victory of Daniel Chapo (Frelimo) in the elections for President of the Republic on October 9, with 70.67% of the votes, results that still require validation by the Constitutional Council.

According to the results of the general recount of the October 9 elections, announced by the president of the CNE, Carlos Matsinhe, in Maputo, Daniel Chapo, a candidate supported by the Front for the Liberation of Mozambique (Frelimo, in power), won. with more than 50% of the votes in all the electoral districts of the country, totaling 4,912,762 votes.

Venâncio Mondlane, supported by the Optimist Party for the Development of Mozambique ( Podemos, extra-parliamentary), came in second place, with 20.32%, totaling 1,412,517 votes.

In third place in the presidential elections was Ossufo Momade, president of the Mozambican National Resistance (Renamo), until now the largest opposition party, with 403,591 votes (5.81%), followed by Lutero Simango, president of the Democratic Movement of Mozambique (MDM). , third parliamentary party), with 223,066 votes (3.21%).

In this election, 43.48% of the more than 17.1 million registered voters voted.

The general elections of October 9 included the seventh presidential elections – in which the current head of state, Filipe Nyusi, who reached the two-term limit, was no longer running –, simultaneously with legislative elections, for provincial assemblies and for governors.
