The president of Chega entered the hall of the Batalha Exhibition Center, in Leiria, knowing full well what was coming: there is an urgent battle that must be waged: that of internal criticism. The next one, which culminates in the 2026 elections and the goal of becoming a government, can (and should) wait.

Presenting the motion of confidence to André Ventura, the leader left nothing unsaid to the internal adversaries. He challenged them to “come to Batalha” and criticized them for generating a feeling of disunity in the party, when weapons should be pointed in one direction: that of the opposition to the PS and the system. But, at this early stage of the battle, André Ventura seems to have the upper hand. there were no signs of internal criticism this Saturday in the National Council. In fact, Nuno Afonso, considered a putative candidate to face Ventura, had already assured the Observer that he would not be present.
