Portugal donates more than 50 thousand euros to Cape Verde to develop projects in Justice

Portugal will make more than 50,000 euros available to Cape Verde to develop projects in the justice sector, the Portuguese Minister of Justice, who is visiting that African country, said this Friday in the city of Praia.

Speaking to journalists, on the sidelines of a conference organized by the National Assembly on the occasion of the 30th anniversary of the Constitution of the Republic of Cape Verde, Catarina Sarmento e Castro announced that the support will be available under a protocol that the two ministries will sign this Friday.

The protocol, he continued, aims to deepen relations and the development of Justice projects in Cape Verde, specifically in training and laboratory techniques.

“We come here to deepen these alliances, which are very important for both countries,” said the minister, indicating that this amount will be used for this year’s activities and that the two countries are already working on future protocols in this sector.

The Minister of Justice of Cape Verde, Joana Rosa, added that the document also aims to strengthen bilateral cooperation in areas such as social reintegration, the Judicial Police and the laboratory part, with the Institute of Legal Medicine and Forensic Sciences, which will be installed gradually and should be fully operational on all islands in 10 years, according to a study presented in October 2021.

At the level of this cooperation, we are going to strengthen it, we are making it effective, in some way, with concrete projects and actions that we have to develop, within the specificities of Cape Verde, but always acknowledging Portugal’s progress in relation to various topics and what are the good teachings that we must bring and import and, in a certain way, adapt them to the Cape Verdean reality”, stressed the Cape Verdean minister.

Another objective of the visit of the Portuguese Minister of Justice to Cape Verde is to participate in the commemorations of the 30th anniversary of the Constitution of the Republic of that African country, having already participated in another conference organized by the Government.

“It is a very important day for Cape Verde and Portugal could not fail to be represented at these commemorations of the 30th anniversary of the Constitution of the Republic, which is a sister, democratic, pluralist Constitution that defends human rights and fundamental rights” , highlighted Catarina Sarmento e Castro, in activities that also coincide with the commemoration of the National Human Rights Day.

In addition to participating in these activities, the Portuguese minister made a courtesy visit this morning to the Cape Verdean Prime Minister, Ulisses Correia e Silva, will have a meeting with his counterpart, a dinner offered by the Portuguese ambassador in Cape Verde and on Saturday visit the museum from the Tarrafal de Santiago concentration camp.

The 1992 Constitution, approved on September 25, emerged after the democratization process in Cape Verde, after the one-party period, and sought to provide the country with a set of rules that included the principles of pluralist democracy and the State of Democratic Law. consecrated, having undergone two revisions (1999 and 2010).

The 30th anniversary of the Constitution of Cape Verde also has a commemoration program with a conference that will be promoted on Sunday, September 25, by the President of the Republic, José Maria Neves.
