The coins bury the PSD’s claims to the throne. “What the country needs is to have Montenegro as prime minister”

In the week that marks one year since he formally took office as mayor of Lisbon, Carlos Moedas joined many of those responsible for the 2021 victory to commemorate the date at an event in the Príncipe Real area. And the mayor could not be clearer about his future: “What the country needs is to have Luís Montenegro as Prime Minister of Portugal.”

There has long been speculation about the possibility of Carlos Moedas entering the race for the Social Democratic leadership if Luís Montenegro fails to make it through the 2024 European elections. He has been ambiguous about a future candidate for candidate, two developments that helped fuel the theses that run behind the scenes of the party from the moment that Montenegro advanced to a candidacy for the leadership of the PSD.

Now, after a speech in which he took stock of the first twelve months of his term, in which he praised his various advisers, Carlos Moedas took advantage of the last sentence of the speech to make a statement of faith in Luís Montenegro. If you believe in the words of the mayor, the former European Commissioner won’t move a muscle to stop the path of the social democratic leader towards the next legislative elections.
