Veteran Italian coach Fabio Capello has revealed that he tried to sign current Juventus defender Giorgio Chiellini when he was Roma manager.

Chiellini began his football career with Roma’s youth but began playing at a professional level with Livorno in 2000.

Chiellini moved to Juventus in the summer of 2005 and spent his first season under Capello, who was the team’s coach, the coach leaving at the end of the season to take over Real Madrid.

“Cillini should have joined Roma when I was their manager,” Capello told Sky Sport Italia.

He added: “He played a reserve match against Roma when he was with Livorno and I went to see him, but Luciano Moggi was much faster and managed to bring him to Juventus.

Chiellini has announced that he will leave Juventus at the end of the current season, and the match against Lazio was his last at the Allianz Stadium before the end of the Italian league.
