Former F1 godfather Englishman Bernie Ecclestone was arrested for illegal possession of a firearm at a Brazilian airport and then released on bail on Wednesday night.

Brazilian police said in a statement that they had prepared a report on the illegal possession of firearms without specifying Ecclestone’s identity.

Police indicated it was a small silver .32 caliber gun without cartridges, found in a purse after a regular search at the Viracopos airport near Sao Paulo.

The 91-year-old Briton was arrested and taken to the police station, where he was finally released on bail after paying 6,060 rials (about 1,200 euros).

According to the G1 website, Ecclestone left Brazil aboard a private jet and flew to Switzerland with his wife.

Ecclestone, nicknamed “Mr E”, led Formula 1 for four decades, until January 2017.
