The New York Yankees and Tampa Bay Rays have regularly suspended game broadcasts on Twitter to draw attention to gun violence in the United States.
As a rule, the Twitter accounts of both organizations publish messages about the game in real time. Instead, they released their gun violence statistics on Thursday. The actions of the two Major League Baseball teams followed a shooting at a Uvalde school in which an 18-year-old gunman killed 19 children and two teachers at a Texas elementary school.

In a post, the Yankees stated that “more than 4,100 Hispanics have died from gun violence” in the country. Rays and Yankees have added gun violence statistics resources to their posts.
“This can’t be normal,” Rays said in a similar message on Twitter.

Rays also announced a $50,000 donation to Everytown, a nonprofit dedicated to getting gun control legislation through Congress.
The two baseball teams were not the first sports organizations to advocate changes to gun laws after the Uvalda attack. The Miami Heat reportedly recently urged attendees of a game to call their senators and request gun control.
“The Heat encourages you to contact your state senators by calling 202-224-3121 to leave a message asking for their support of common sense gun laws,” Michael Bayamonte told Heat fans. “You can also make changes to the ballot box.”
Golden State Warriors head coach Steve Kerr also called for gun control before Game 4 of the NBA Western Conference Finals. Kerr has also partnered with the Brady Campaign to raise funds against “NRA-supported politicians,” according to an Outkick report released Thursday.
