Manchester City defender Benjamin Mendy has been charged with a new rape charge following the lifting of reporting restrictions, according to a court source.

The 27-year-old has filed a new rape complaint against Mindy, who is charged with eight rapes, one count of sexual assault and one count of attempted rape, all involving seven women who filed complaints against him.

The 27-year-old City defender has pleaded not guilty to previous charges.

The media was not allowed to report on the new charge, but Judge Stephen Everett lifted the restriction during a hearing at Chester Crown Court in northwest England.

The 10 charges against Mandy relate to events that allegedly took place between October 2018 and August 2021 at his home in Prestbury, Cheshire.

Mendy will appear before a jury on July 25 along with his co-defendant, Luis Saha Matori, 40, who also pleaded not guilty, denying eight counts of rape and four counts of sexually assaulting eight young women.

Mendy, the 2018 world champion with the Rooster national team, was released in early January and placed under judicial supervision pending trial.

Mendy moved to City for €60m in 2017 after he caught the attention of Marseille and spent one season at Monaco, making him the most expensive defender in history at the time. He has made 75 appearances with the English champions over the past two seasons but has suffered from declining form and several injuries.

The defender has made 10 appearances for France, the last of which was in November 2019.
