Former Belgian international defender Vincent Kompany will coach Burnley, who will compete in the second-tier Championship next season in England, the club announced on Tuesday. The former Manchester City captain will return to England after managing Anderlecht in his home country for the past three seasons. “Burnley are delighted to announce the appointment of Vincent Kompany as the team’s first coach,” the club, who were relegated at the end of last season in the Premier League, said in a statement.

The former center-back has played 11 seasons for City and led them to a golden season of four league titles, two cup titles and four league cups. The 36-year-old left in 2019, where he played the role of player-coach in his first season at Anderlecht and then took over as manager for the last two seasons.
Last season, he led the team to third place in the Belgian League, qualifying for the Converse League qualifiers, as well as the Cup final, where the team lost to Gent on penalties.
The former captain retired from international football in 2019, a year after he was taken to the semi-finals of the 2018 World Cup in Russia.
