The NFL has seen an increasing trend of players retiring early. However, unlike most young retirees, Colts guard King Willis did not retire for fear of damaging his brain.
He retired to work full time for God.
The 26-year-old defender announced his decision to quit football after just three seasons to continue promoting the gospel of Christ.
“After much prayer and deliberation, I have decided to officially retire from the NFL, trying to dedicate the rest of my life to furthering the gospel of Jesus Christ,” Willis wrote on Instagram. “I am grateful to all my family, friends and everyone who has supported me on this journey thus far and look forward to your continued support in the next phase of my life.
“I am both humbled and excited to follow God’s divine calling for my life, which has brought me so much joy and purpose. Thank you all for your support over the years…”
According to ESPN, “Willis, who was selected in the fourth round in 2019, was a strong starting quarterback for the team in the middle of his rookie season. He finished his career with 219 knockouts and four tackles, starting 33 of 39 games played.”
Colts coach Frank Reich said he has a lot of “respect” and “admiration” for his former player and the changes in his career.
“We are grateful and grateful for King’s contribution to the Colts on and off the court over the past three seasons,” Reich said in a statement. “Our dressing room will lack King’s character, leadership and professionalism and Sunday games. I admire and respect his decision to move on to the next phase of his life and service, and my prayers are always with him.”
