Athletic Bilbao striker Inaki Williams has announced that he has now decided to defend the colors of Ghana instead of Spain, hoping to take part in the latter’s squad at the World Cup in Qatar later this year.

Williams was born in Bilbao, in the Spanish Basque Country, to Ghanaian parents, but once, in 2016, he was called up to the Spanish national team.

Iñaki, 28, wrote on social media: “I feel like it’s time for me to go back to my roots because Africa and Ghana mean so much to me and my family.”

“I want to give back a small part of what we have because Ghana has been instrumental in making me who I am today,” he added.

He continued, “Today begins a new challenge. From now on, I will defend the Ghana jersey and do my best for it. I am one of the black stars (Ghana national team title).”

Williams’ decision was a huge morale boost for Ghana, who were placed in a group of Portugal, Uruguay and South Korea in the final scheduled for November 21-December 18.
