The Slovenian cyclist Primoz Roglic (Jumbo-Visma), runner-up in the 2020 edition, left the 109th Tour de France this Sunday to recover from injuries resulting from the fall suffered in the fifth stage.
“To allow my wounds to heal properly, we have decided that I will not play today,” explained Roglic, quoted on the Dutch team’s social media.
This is the 32-year-old Slovenian’s second consecutive withdrawal from the Tour de France, as he was also forced to withdraw last year due to injuries stemming from a fall.
“I am proud of my contribution to the current standings and I am confident that the team will deliver on our yellow and green ambitions. Thank you all for your support,” he concluded.
‘Rogla’ crashed in the fifth stage, along with other cyclists, about 30 kilometers from the finish line, in a fall caused by a ‘delimiter’ on the road that came loose, and was left out of the fight for the general, headed by his Danish partner Jonas Vingegaard.
The Slovenian, current three-time champion of the Vuelta a España and Olympic time trial champion, has worked in recent days defending the yellow card and placed 21st overall, more than 33 minutes behind Vingegaard.
Roglic, who will now prepare for the Vuelta, is the first ‘out’ of the Jumbo-Visma team, which also has Wout van Aert as the leader of the points classification.
The peloton completes today the 15th stage of the 109th Tour de France, a 202.5-kilometre connection between Rodez and Carcassone, which precedes the last rest day of the race.
