The Moroccan soccer federation and coach Vahid Halilhodzic “agreed to separate amicably” due to “differences of opinion” three months before participating in the World Cup in Qatar, it was announced Thursday.
In a statement, which puts an end to months of speculation about the coach’s departure, the federation “thanks Halilhodzic for the work done during his mission as head of the national team, especially qualifying for the next World Cup.”
This is the third time that Franco-Bosnian coach Vahid Halilhodzic, 69, who has led the Moroccan national team since August 2019, has is fired after qualifying a team for the final of a World Cupafter Ivory Coast and Japan.
The Moroccan federation did not reveal the identity of Vahid Halilhodzic’s successor, but said “it will mobilize all means to guarantee the national team a good preparation for the 2022 World Cup” in Qatar.
Morocco is part of group F of the World Cup group stage, along with the teams of Belgium, Canada and Croatia. The Moroccan team opens with Croatia on November 23, after which it will face Belgium on December 27 and Canada on December 1.
