Former Oakland Raiders player Andre Rison says coach John Gruden deserves a second chance to continue his coaching career.
Reason told TMZ Sports that “there is no God” and that no one is perfect, and believes Gruden’s behavior behind the scenes should be forgiven.
Gruden resigned from the Raiders in October after private emails containing conflicting comments were leaked to the media. The emails in question contained racist and misogynistic comments.
But Rison feels that people are not given enough freedom these days.
“For some reason everybody thinks they’re God these days, because social media and all the other platforms they can express their opinions on,” Raison said. “God gave him the gift of coaching and if he repent and forgive his negativities, mistakes and mistakes it is up to him and God, I have no problem with that.”
Reason played for the Raiders with Gruden as head coach during the 2000 season and said he had never seen or heard of Gruden behaving inappropriately towards anyone. Rison added that he does not see Gruden as racist.
“For him to be a racist, if he is a racist, he is confident that many black athletes are given opportunities and opportunities to feed their families,” Rison said.
Gruden never tried to defend the content of his emails and admitted the remarks were “shameful”. But last week, speaking to the Arkansas Little Rock Touchdown Club, he said he wanted to “try again” in coaching.
