The 2022-2023 NFL season is just one week away, and there are already calls to sign Colin Kaepernick, but according to ESPN’s Steven A. Smith, the Dallas Cowboys won’t do it because Texas is “too patriotic.”
Of course, Cowboys QB Dak Prescott broke his right thumb on Sunday, which injury prompted new calls to bring Kaepernick back after six years out of the game.
However, Kaepernick will not replace Prescott. The owner is worried.
“You know, that’s another matter, maybe another day. I don’t think that’s going to happen… You might want to call Colin Kaepernick,” Smith said on Monday’s broadcast. “You might want to know. He’s not there, but he’s a playmaker whose legs can be used, you have to consider that.”

He said it wasn’t because it wasn’t good enough, but because Texas was too “patriotic.”

Smith noted that Cowboys fans would not welcome bringing a famous anti-American national anthem protester to Dallas.
“But I don’t think it will be because it’s Texas,” Smith said sarcastically. “And the state of Texas, you know what I’m talking about, patriotic personalities they’re proud of, because, you know, the whole Kaepernick situation was stolen, that narrative stolen, for them and Terry Jones. They’re not going to let that happen.” meddling. But I’ll think about it. I would say, But let’s get back to reality, because I don’t think it’s real.”
Of course, Smith made the false claim that Kaepernick’s innocent and naive protest against police brutality was “kidnapped” by those who wanted to portray Kaepernick as a hateful anti-American.
In reality, however, at the beginning of his protests, Kaepernick’s claims were more in line with how vilifiers presented them than with those who claimed that racists like Smith were lying about Kaepernick’s motives.
Former Cowboys player Michael Irvin rejected the idea of bringing Kaepernick back to the NFL.
“Let’s deal with this stuff with Colin Kaepernick. Let’s stop. Colin Kaepernick hasn’t played football in five years. Man, come on. Let’s stop thinking we can resurrect Colin Kaepernick and he’ll come and resurrect the football team. I’ll take a shot with Cooper Rush,” said Irwin.
Since leaving the NFL at the end of the 2016 season, he has said he is ready to return in various ways, but instead accused the NFL of being a matter of enslavement for black players.
