Last week, at the Wanda Metropolitano and against FC Porto, the logic remained: Griezmann came on in the 63rd minute and was decisive, scoring the winning goal for Atl. Madrid already well into the discount period. The use of the French striker by the mattresses It has been the controversy on the table in Spain and it has to do with the purchase clause included in the transfer made by Barcelona – but the story could change in the coming days.
According to L’Equipe, Atl. Madrid and Barcelona are very close to reaching an agreement that reduces Griezmann’s termination clause from 40 to 25 million euros — a value that the mattresses they are already available to pay at the end of the season and that, consequently, allows the striker to accumulate more minutes on the field from here.

It should be remembered that the French striker returned to Madrid in August last year after an experience that he had not achieved in Catalonia. The initial transfer only referred to last season, 2021/22, but Atl. Madrid finally decided to activate the loan renewal option clause, leaving Griezmann linked to the club again until the end of this season, 2022/23. The problem? In that same agreement, Barcelona safeguarded the certainty that the mattresses would have to activate a mandatory release clause at the end of the season, worth 40 million euros, if the player played at least 45 minutes in 50% of the games.
That is to say, definitively and in a logical chess that does not require great suppositions, Atl. Madrid has been managing the use of Griezmann so as not to have to pay said 40 million at the end of the season. However, according to El País, the purpose of the Atl. Madrid has always been precisely to pressure Barcelona to lower that value — that’s the mattresses they want the French striker but they don’t want to pay so much for him.
Griezmann is never a starter at Atl. Madrid, he always enters in the 63rd minute and the reason could lead Barça to seek answers
The scheme was even assumed by Diego Simeone, who after the meeting with FC Porto returned to give his opinion on the matter after having already done so in the previous days. “We have been together for many years, we are very fond of each other. But beyond that, there is a reality, which is the numbers. His last season was uneven, but we hope he is strong and serves us as we are using him. We can see the reality and it is that, in 30 minutes, he is doing very well. In 60 minutes, we don’t know… I’m going for the realities”, explained the Argentine coach after the victory against the Dragons.
Given the evidence of Griezmann’s strategy, Mundo Deportivo came to say last week that Barcelona intended to go to court to claim the 40 million euros, even alleging that Atl. Madrid had already reached the mandatory clause last season. Apparently, however, the two clubs will have reached an agreement that will see the French striker stay in Madrid permanently, used for more than half an hour and cost only 25 million euros.
