Energy. IPDJ launches recommendations to reduce consumption in sports facilities

The Portuguese Institute for Sport and Youth (IPDJ) released a set of recommendations, both temporary and structural, to reduce energy and water consumption in sports facilities, given the crisis in the sector, the entity reported today.

“Given the current geopolitical and environmental situation and in line with the guidelines of the European Union (EU), it has become urgent to adopt measures to rationalize the use of energy and water resourcesminimizing the economic and environmental impacts associated with its production and use”, reads the IPDJ statement.

This set of recommendations includes areas such as lighting systems and electrical equipment, air conditioning and ventilation systems, as well as water systems.

After a period of global pandemic that forced a confinement of the population, which kept them away from sports, the closure of the facilities should be the last resort. We believe that this package of recommendations will minimize the impact of the escalation in energy costs and will contribute to a solution that allows the population to continue practicing sports and physical activity, which is the main concern of the IPDJ”, highlighted the entity led by Vítor Pataco.

Among the long list of recommendations is the reduction of the use of artificial lighting as far as possible, taking advantage, whenever possible, of artificial natural light, as well as altering cleaning and maintenance routines, for times when that is possible. to do it with natural lighting.

“Reduce, or even eliminate, non-essential artificial lighting from all interior or exterior spaces (for example in cases of purely decorative lighting). The application of this recommendation must safeguard the security of the sites”, the organization stressed.

It is also recommended installation of presence sensors in changing rooms, work spaces and circulation, indoors and outdoorsthat allow lighting management according to the occupation of the spaces.

“Restrict the use of mechanical lifting means, when they exist, recommending the adoption of awareness-raising measures to reduce their use, the use of ladders being preferable,” also suggested the IPDJ, which also pointed out the need to “strictly restrict necessary, the use of electrical office, lighting and kitchen equipment.

At the same time, it is requested that favor, whenever possible, the natural ventilation of spaces avoiding the use of artificial air conditioningas well as keeping windows and doors closed in spaces where the use of air conditioning is absolutely necessary.
