Borussia Dortmund youth coach Mike Thalberg spoke about how his team faced racist abuse during a match against Sevilla in the UEFA U-19 Youth Champions League.
The coach did not reveal the names of those who were targeted, but team player Abdullah Kamara was reportedly targeted by Sevilla players by mimicking the sounds of monkeys several times during a match that ended in a 1-1 draw in Spain.
“The result is the second because we are standing here again and we have to talk about racist statements from the opposing team,” Thalberg told Dortmund’s official website.
“Four weeks ago I was in Cottbus when my players were insulted because of the color of their skin. Again, today we encountered several situations that included insults related to skin color and noise.”
And he continued: “I was lost in words, between two halves we decided together with the players to finish the match. It’s sad for the football we love more than anything.”
The match was reportedly stopped at the end of the first half due to an altercation between the players, with newspapers reporting that the referee did not hear any insults.
