Uruguayan players targeted by FIFA for protests in match against Ghana

FIFA is investigating players from the Uruguayan national team. José María Giménez, Edinson Cavani, Fernando Muslera and Diego Godín are the subject of the disciplinary process for unsportsmanlike and offensive conduct towards Ghana-Uruguay referee Daniel Siebert.

It all happened when the German referee whistled the end of the game, which confirmed the elimination of the sky-blue team. Uruguay even won 2-0, but needed one more goal to advance to the round of 16. In the opinion of the South Americans, the referee was wrong by not scoring two penalties throughout the match, one of them in the final moments of the match. The players surrounded the referee and the protests were notorious.

The first controversial play occurred in the 58th minute when the Ghanaian defender Amartey, according to the Uruguayans, brought down Darwin Núñez. The second moment of protest was a fall by Cavani in the area at 90+3′, in a play with Alidu Seidu.

At the end of the game, when the players were meeting in the dressing room, Cavani was seen knocking over the VAR monitor. Uruguay had two consecutive editions of the World Cup going to the knockout phase. The celestial team was in third place in group H.
