All regions of continental Portugal will continue, at least until Thursday, with very high concentrations of pollen in the atmosphere, according to the pollen bulletin, published by the Portuguese Society of Allergology and Clinical Immunology (SPAIC).
According to SPAIC, very high concentrations of pollen in the atmosphere are expected in all regions of the continent and low levels for the archipelagos of Azores and Madeira.
“It should be noted that, at this time of year, in almost the entire country, are present in the air, at significant levels, pollen grains with a high capacity tosuch as grass, parietaria, plantain and quenopodium and olive trees”, he says.
According to forecasts, until Thursday (May 26) in the Lisbon and Setúbal region pollens from olive and oak trees, grasses, parietaria, banana and quenopodium will predominate.
In Porto (between the Douro and the Minho), the pollen from oak and olive trees, and herbaceous herbs, parietaria, plantain and nettles stand out.
In the Trás-os-Montes and Alto Douro region, pollens come mainly from oak, pine and olive trees, and from grasses, parietaria, sorrel and banana.
In Coimbra (Beira Litoral region), pollens from olive and oak trees, herbs and grasses from nettle and parietaria predominate.
In the Beira Interior region, oak, olive and pine pollen, herbaceous herbs, banana and parietaria stand out.
In the Alentejo region, pollen is abundant in olive and cork oak trees and in gramineous herbs, plane trees and parietarias.
In the Algarve region, also with high levels, pollens from olive and oak trees and grasses, bananas and quenopodia dominate.
According to SPAIC, outdoor activities should be avoided when pollen concentrations are high.
“Walking in the garden, mowing the lawn, camping, or playing sports outdoors will increase your exposure to pollen and your risk of allergies,” it adds.
SPAIC also considers that medication will be the most effective way to combat allergy symptomsadvises the consultation of a specialist in immunoallergy for the correct diagnosis and prescription of the most appropriate medication and warns that prevention “can go through the realization of anti-allergy vaccines”.
The pollen bulletin publishes weekly levels of pollen in the atmosphere, collected by reading posts in various regions of the country.
