The BMW M240i xDrive, Honda Civic Type R and VW Golf R are among the fastest and most fun-to-drive offerings on the market, for those who limit their investment to between €60,000 and €70,000. The power of its engines varies between the 374 hp of the BMW and the 320 hp of the Honda and Volkswagen, but the reality is that the weight of the German three-volume coupe is around 1765 kg, which makes it much heavier than the 1,551.kg from the VW and 1,395kg from the Honda, which will certainly balance the M240i’s head start. Hence the curiosity to know the results of the comparison organized by Carwow, to determine which is the fastest.
The mechanics favor the M240i, not only for its power but also for its robustness (500 Nm of torque, against 420 Nm for the VW and 400 Nm for the Honda), but also for its nobility and sophistication, since the BMW uses a unit with three-liter, six-cylinder, versus the competition’s two-liter, four-cylinder engines. Then there’s the advantage of all-wheel drive-equipped models, with BMW’s and VW’s four-wheel drive assisting in starting, compared to Honda’s two-wheel drive, which is, however, clearly lighter.
The video shows how weight doesn’t help, but it’s far from the most important element, as the increased traction and increased horsepower work wonders. In the 1/4 mile (0-402 meter) stationary snatch, the BMW dispatches the competition in 12.4 seconds, with the VW second fastest at close range (12.7 seconds) and the Honda fastest. behind, with 14.2 seconds.
Starting at 80 km/h, the BMW is again the fastest in both attempts, regardless of whether the driving mode is more “calm” or more sporty. Honda and VW trade places with each other, with the Type R being second quickest in the “quietest” mode, while the Golf R beats its Japanese rival in the sportiest mode.
When it comes to braking, it’s finally the lightest car’s turn to shine, as the Honda needed less space to brake when traveling at 160 km/h. BMW and VW were the same in terms of registrations.
