Knesset approves law that will allow family members of terrorists to be deported
The Knesset, the Israeli parliament, approved a law that will allow the Minister of the Interior to deport relatives of terrorists.
According to the newspaper HaaretzA family member of someone convicted of terrorism can be deported to Gaza “or any other destination determined by the circumstances” if it is proven that they “knew in advance of a terrorist plan and did not take the necessary measures to prevent it.”
The law was passed with 61 Knesset members voting in favor and 41 against.
The Minister of the Interior will also have the authority to deport a family member who “expresses support or empathy for the act of terrorism or who demonstrates praise, admiration or encouragement” of acts of this type.
Under the proposal, any Israeli citizen could be deported for between seven and 15 years. Noncitizens can be deported in 10 to 20 years.
